Indy Sports-Hidden Gems

by Logan Sanford

People love sports for different reasons. It may bring a sense of belonging or community to you. It possibly allows you to forget about the stresses of everyday life. For some, sports were an emotional outlet during their upbringing or taught valuable lessons about work ethic, goal setting, and more.

Whether you are a sports fan or not, you probably know that Indianapolis is known for hosting a wide variety of athletic events over the years. From hosting "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" with the Indy 500 to previously hosting Final Fours and Super Bowls, there is no argument that the Crossroads of America knows how to attract an audience. In addition to hosting major events, Indianapolis has a strong lineup of professional teams including the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers, Indiana Fever, Indianapolis Indians and the Indy Eleven. But... What are some of the "hidden gems" that the city has to offer?

Hinkle Fieldhouse

As a Butler University graduate, I may have some bias, but the bulldog's stadium is more than a sports venue. Much more...

  • In 1987, Hinkle Fieldhouse was officially declared a National Historic Landmark.
  • In 2020, Stadium Journey ranked Hinkle Fieldhouse as "The Best College Basketball Venue" in the country.
  • Hinkle served as one of the locations for the movie, "Hoosiers." ESPN voted "Hoosiers" as the No. 4 Sport's Movie of All-Time.
  • Hinkle Fieldhouse is one of the Top 10 oldest college arenas and was built in 1928. When it was first built, it was the largest venue in the U.S.

The fieldhouse has quite the resume. History. Atmosphere. Architecture. Whether you cherish the experience of watching a game or are a history  buff, Hinkle Fieldhouse is a hidden gem in the Circle City.

NCAA Hall of Champions

It may not be the same adrenaline rush as watching the Indy 500 cars zoom past at over 100 miles per hour, but the NCAA museum is the ideal spot for an interactive weekend in Indy. With the NCAA Headquarters located along the White River in Indianapolis, the Hall of Champions offers an engaging experience with its guests. Do you want to learn more about your alma mater or what it truly feels like to be a college athlete? Check out the NCAA Hall of Champions!

Indiana Farmers Coliseum

The Coliseum is an all encompassing venue. Mainly known for it being the home arena to the Indy Fuel hockey team and IUPUI Jaguars, the Coliseum has hosted its fair share of events. The Indiana Pacers called the Coliseum home throughout the late 1960s and several other tournaments were previously held there including the IHSAA Boys Basketball Tournament, the Horizon League Basketball Championships, and the 2021 Men's NCAA Tournament.
